Book Review – Love Works

Title: Love Works: Seven Timeless Principles for Effective Leaderslove works

Author: Joel Manby

Joel Manby has been in a leadership roll much of his corporate career.  He was an executive of Saturn during it’s hayday.  He has been the head of SAAB North America and now he is President and CEO of Herschend Family Entertainment.  They own and operate theme parks and attractions all over the country.  Parks including Dollywood in Tennessee  Stone Mountain Park just outside of Atlanta, and Wild Adventures in Valdosta, GA just to name a few.

In his book Joel talks about “Leading with love” and how he has found that is the best way to lead.  Joel states in Love Works that “Love isn’t a feeling, but an action, an action by which leaders and entire organizations can experience almost unimaginable success and personal fulfillment.” He also states that they “achieve profits by doing the right thing for customers and employees; profits are not an end in themselves. Profits are a product of doing the right thing – over and over again.” and “We do this because it makes good business sense and it’s the right thing to do.”

The main thing I take away from this book is that treating others, customers and employees, the way that you would  want and expect to be treated is the best way to lead.  You treat your employees with respect, kindness, and let them know their opinion matters they will work harder for you.  They will also treat your customers with that same respect.  To take a couple more lines from the book, “Some people thing leadership is only about the bottom line.  What I have learned is that “only” is the wrong sentence.”  He goes on to say that leadership is about the bottom line, and loving the people you work with, and your community, and feeling satisfied a days end.

Love Works is a great book.  I recommend it to everyone who is a leader or inspires to become a leader.  In my 27 year working career I have had some great managers and supervisors but I have also had some not so great bosses, as I’m sure we all have.  I am truly convinced that if those not so great bosses would have read this book they would have been great leaders.
