Book Review: Team Of Rivals By Doris Kearns Goodwin

Team of Rivals

Title: Team Of Rivals

Author:  Doris Kearns Goodwin

I just finished reading, or rather listening to, Team Of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I purchased this book because I heard Michael Hyatt speak very favorably about it on his podcast, This Is Your Life.  A great Podcast that I highly recommend. I purchased the Kindle version and because I spend a lot of time in my car I also got the audio companion with it.  I was amazed at how long this book is.  The Kindle book doesn’t have page numbers so I don’t know how many pages it is but the audio is over 36 hours long.

I really enjoyed the book.  Although most of the book was dedicated to his years in political life the book ranged from early childhood to his death.  It could be considered a biography of the man’s life.  The premise of the book is how Lincoln took his greatest political rivals from his early career and placed them in his Cabinet after he was elected president, creating his Team Of Rivals.  The mark of a good story teller is if the person telling the story can pull you into the story and make you feel as if you were there.  This book did that for me.  A great book and if you enjoy history, the Civil War, or admire Lincoln I highly recommend you get Team Of Rivals.

The recent movie Lincoln was largely based on this book.  I have’t seen the movie yet but I’ll be getting it soon.  If it’s half as good as the book it will be great.
